Six brief questions about an assessment you've used. Work at your own pace — close the tab and everything is gone unless you choose to save it at the end.
Step 1 of 5
Pick Your Course
Choose your department and a course you teach. The walkthrough will pull DSLO/ISLO mapping from the Alignment Repository where it exists.
📋 Reference: the end-to-end shape (six questions)
If your facilitator didn't cover the primer slides, or if you'd like a quick recap, here's the shape the activity follows. Each step asks one of these.
What it measures
A specific learning outcome stated with a measurable action verb — what students do, not just what they "know."
How it's given
An instrument that produces evidence of that learning, implemented consistently across sections.
Standard for success
A specific threshold paired with the skill or concept being measured.
Sample
Who took it: schema, selection method, participation rate against beginning enrollment.
% met
The result, contextualized — comparison to prior cycles, target, or sub-skill breakdown.
Intervention
What changed (or what's planned), why, and the comparison evidence — or what evidence you'll look for next cycle.
Select the department offering the course you'll work with.
Pick the specific course. If you don't see it, choose "not on this list" at the bottom.
Enter the course as it appears in the catalog (course code + title).
Your responses will note that mapping is preliminary, pending department chair confirmation.
How was the course delivered, in what modality? (Form 1 / Form 2 field)
⏱️ 60-Second Knowledge Check
Check what's true for you right now — no lookups, no judgment. We'll ask again at the end and show you your gain.
Step 2 of 5
Your CSLO & Instrument
Two questions: what student learning the assessment measures, and the tool you use to measure it.
Don't have an assessment in mind? Think about your most recent quiz, your final project rubric, the way you grade essays, or a clinical demonstration you've observed. Anything you've used to measure student learning counts.
State the SLO(s) verbatim from the course outline, with a measurable action verb. (Form 1: CSLO field)
Strong instrument descriptions answer four things: (1) the tool, (2) implementation across sections, (3) shared resources, (4) achievement vs. aptitude / norm- vs. criterion-referenced. (Form 1: Common Assessment Instrument)
Step 3 of 5
Standard & Sample
What it takes to be successful, and who took it.
Strong benchmarks pair the threshold with the specific skill or concept being measured. (Form 1: Benchmark / Performance Target)
Strong sample descriptions name three things: the schema, how students/sections were selected, and the expected percentage based on beginning-of-semester enrollment. (Form 1: Sample / Form 2: # Assessed)
Step 4 of 5
Results & Reflection
What happened — or what would happen — when you give this assessment.
Pick the option that fits. Either path keeps the walkthrough moving — and either path maps to Hi-C.
I have results
You've given the assessment and have outcome data. We'll ask for the percentage.
Not yet — I want to keep going to see how this fits
Maybe you haven't given it yet, or haven't pulled the data together. No problem. We'll show you how the cycle would work and where your results would land.
A clean Form 2 outcome reports the percentage and contextualizes it. (Form 2: Outcome & Performance)
Worth holding in mind
When you give this assessment, the percentage of students meeting your standard is what Form 2 captures. You don't need a number here. The question travels with you — the walkthrough will show you where that number would land in the cycle.
This determines whether your assessment maps to Form 3A (Improve) and Form 3B (Verify). (Form 3A / Form 3B fields)
Yes — I've already changed something
Closed-loop case. We'll ask what changed and how you know it worked.
Not yet — but I plan to
We'll ask what you'd try and how you'd measure it.
Not yet — just want to see how this fits the cycle
No problem. The walkthrough still shows the mapping.
Describe the intervention and the evidence that it worked or didn't.
Worth holding in mind
Looking at where you are with this assessment — what's one small change you could imagine trying when you next teach this? You don't need to answer here. The question travels with you.

What now
Four things you can do with what you've worked through:
Bookmark hic-walkthrough.comm-unity-os.org for future reference. The walkthrough lives here.
Open your actual Form 1 in another tab. Copy your CSLO statement and instrument language from this page directly into the form. The field labels match.
Use the print button below to save your walkthrough as a PDF. Email it to yourself for your own records.
Bring the PDF — or the URL — to your next assessment-coordinator conversation or department assessment meeting.
Optional · Institutional Evidence
Save your walkthrough to the Daley assessment record?
Your completed walkthrough — CSLO, instrument, benchmark, sample, results, and intervention — directly evidences HLC Core Component 3.E (Assessment of Student Learning) along with related criteria (3.A, 3.F, 3.G, and 4.A as applicable) and your program's ICCB Program Review template (Academic Disciplines for transfer/gen-ed programs; CTE for occupational programs — auto-selected from your department, see indicator at Step 1). With your consent, this record will be retained as part of Daley's assessment evidence file.
Your Chain Report is a working copy. Nothing here is submitted anywhere — official forms are filed through Brightspace when your discipline enters the cycle, and the mapping panel above shows exactly where each answer will go. Checked the coordinator follow-up box? Your Assessment Coordinator will reach out when your discipline’s turn comes — with this report in hand, your forms are largely already written.
Reflection · 90 seconds
Before You Go
The 60-second knowledge check, one more time — check what's true for you now:
Are you considering entering a course into the assessment cycle?
What did today's trace show you that you didn't know before? (optional)
What would help you take the next step? (optional)
Thank you.
Your reflection helps the committee plan fall outreach.
You're done
You've traced one assessment through Hi-C — that's your Chain Report above, with every answer mapped to its official home. Your facilitator will run the closing discussion from a separate set of slides. Print, save, or close this tab when you're ready.
